Vegan Blood Orange and Cardamom Scones

My obsession recently has been blood oranges! I use them in everything! I’ve used them as a flavoring in drinks…yum! I also have baked them into cakes, muffins, and tarts. I’ve even dried them out and hung them on the wall for decoration! I think I’ve proved my point…I love blood oranges! So, you shouldn’t be surprised that blood oranges are the heart of this next recipe. Prepare yourself for the lovely, light and fluffy, Vegan Blood Orange and Cardamom Scones!

These scones will blow your mind! They are packed with flavor and are just the perfect texture. These scones are the perfect companion for a soft, winter morning. Pour yourself a cup of tea, grab a scone, and there you have it, you’re in a period piece! Yes, you heard me right, these scones have the power to bring you back in time. Prepare to feel like any character out of a Jane Austen novel. I would love a scone with a side of Mr. Darcy 😉

Anyways, now let’s talk about the allergy substitutions. For this recipe, I used non-dairy butter. My preferred non-dairy butter is Earth Balance baking sticks. These come in vegan and soy-free varieties! For the milk, I love oat milk, so I used Califia Farms Oat Milk. This milk is vegan, nut-free, and soy-free! I understand everyone has their preferred milk alternative, so use whatever milk your heart desires!

I really hope you like this recipe for Vegan Blood Orange and Cardamom Scones as much as I did. The flavors blend together so wonderfully. Honestly, your mouth will water just at the sight of it! If you want another scone recipe (hooray!), I have plenty more for you! Try these Vegan Expresso Chocolate Chip Sourdough scones! Or these Vegan Cranberry Orange Sourdough scones. Or these Vegan Blueberry Thyme Scones! You have plenty of choices!

  • Prep Time: 15m
  • Cook Time: 20m
  • Total Time: 35m
  • Yield: 8 scones
  • Category: Breakfast, Dairy Free, Egg Free, Nut Free, Vegan

Ingredients

  • 2 c flour
  • 1/3 c granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 8 tbsp. cold non-dairy margarine (cut into small pieces)
  • 1 tsp. blood orange zest
  • 1/2 c Non-dairy milk, add more if too dry
  • 2 tbsp. blood orange juice
  • 1 tbsp. melted non-dairy margarine
  • Raw cane sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place parchment paper on a baking sheet. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. With a pastry cutter or two knives, cut the non-dairy margarine into the flour mixture until it becomes the size of very coarse crumbs.
  2. Stir in the blood orange zest and make a well in the center. Pour in ½ c of the non-dairy milk and mix well. Add additional non-dairy milk if it is too dry.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, gently knead the dough, just until it comes together, and pat it into an 8-inch circle and about 1 inch in thickness. Cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the baking sheet. Melt the remaining 1 T non-dairy and brush it on top of the scones. Sprinkle with the raw cane sugar.
  4. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Can be served warm or at room temperature.
